Salone Satelite 07 – Knockout design from Poland

April 30th, 2007 by Zampik

In this short article from series from Salone Satelite 07 we will focus on group of three girls (Magda Juszczak, Dorota Kabała and Maya Ober) from Poznan – Poland with name KOd – Knockout design. Here you can see some of their work and picture from stand at the fairground how people interacted with their designs.

Interaction

.

About group – Their own words
Dorota and Magda got to know each other in the kindergarten waiting for their parents who were always very late. At the high school, they met Maya, and all of them started attending art classes given by Bulgarian painter Ventzislav Piriankov. In the course of design studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, they started to make projects together and that is how KOd was born. It was more a joke rather than a serious vision of a design group; we are still amazed that it worked out.

„Take away: step by step”

Koncern and Rückl Crystal in Zona Tortona – Milan 07

April 28th, 2007 by press

Engineering Collection is a result of cooperation of Koncern Design and glassworks Rückl Crystal a. s. It is related to the tradition of Czech, hand-craft crystal glassware and moves it forward.

Czech crystal glassware has become a victim of unstable development of Czech economy in last decades. Glass industry was a major artefact of export policy of communist Czechoslovakia in years 1948 – 1989. In last seventeen years it has been facing new phenomenon – turist industry. Both have devastating impacts: It was and it is required to remain at the historicist forms. As a consequence, the minimal development was made.

Five collections from Koncern Design meet current requirements for utility and aesthetics in the field of luxurious beverage glassware. It brings new fancy features into stagnate glass work industry.

Engineering Collection is, exactly in the spirit of experiments of Koncern Design, based on the ironic concept. The matter and the shape of individual collections are elicted from the appereance of metal machine components. Quatation, roughness marks and adequate engineering standarts sand blasted into the surface of the 24% lead crystal then evoke a polemic with the character of glassware industry. The exact engineering products are not a part of symbolic language of the times of avangard any more. Nowadays, we sense it strictly aesthetically, as peculiar elegancy of former industrial epoque. This idiom , in the Engineering Collection, is apllied on the glassware products as another of possible historicist ornamentics. Koncern Design entered into the area of which others designers avoid from. Company Rückl Crystal produces, in smaller series, sets of beverage glassware for whiskey (M80x6), champagne (Morse 1:50), wine (red wine – Involute gearing, white wine – Basic Quatation) and absinth (Splined Shaft).

My World. The New Subjectivity in Design

April 22nd, 2007 by Inez

Warszawa 17th of April – 3rd of June 2007

I recomend to everyone visiting Warszawa to see the exhibition in ZACHĘTA gallery. It is a very interesting event showing polish and british subjectivity in design. At the exhibition there are presented the works of the most interesting British designers. It demonstrates how, in the last decade, the boundary between art, industrial design and artistic design has eroded. On the one hand, a design product is now regarded as simultaneously having certain features of a product of craftwork and, on the other, also is construed as being a work of art. My World is an international exhibition for Experimenta 2005, the Lisbon Design Biennale. This time there are added projects by polish leading studios and designers and also some project of young designers and students who were mentioned in the associated competition.

Czech design visiting Poland

April 16th, 2007 by Inez

On 26-th of April there will be and opening day of the Czech Studio Qubus in the shop MAGAZYN PRAGA in Warszawa. The projects of Qubus show the philosophy of the two designers Maxim Velcovsky and Jakub Berdych, who look back at their time in comunist Czechoslovakia. They keep irony and joke in porcelain and glass objects. The jugglering with socialist motives or with icons of todays consumerism is worth seeing.

The exhibition:
Opening day: 26 April 2007, 6 p.m. exhib. until 21.05.2007
Magazyn Praga
ul. Ząbkowska 27/31 Warszawa

An interview with designer Branko Lukic

April 11th, 2007 by Zampik

Wired blog network did an interview with Branko Lukic designer from Belgrade, Serbia who in the past was working as a lead designer in Frog Design and IDEO. He is cofounder and partner of design consultancy Non objects. Branko is also author of nonobject: The book.

The non·object book is the first of its kind – the first of a new genre we call Design Fiction. In the same way that sci-fi movies and fictional tales stretch your imagination, our hope is to take you on a journey into the future of design and inspiration. We will share stories and concepts that offer a new point of view, a new way of thinking, a new way forward. Of course, as with all fiction, some of our ideas may seem improbable – even impossible. Don’t worry, we bought the tickets. All you have to do is enjoy the ride.

Interested in this book? So wait for its release in the third quarter of 2007.
