One of the most interesting, but less known phenomenas of modern European architecture and design is Slovakian architecture and interiors of the second half of the 20th century. There, in the middle of Europe in this age is related to communism terror and inconsiderateness to city landscape and urbanism in architecture.

This year was published book East Modern by publishing house SpringerWienNewYork, which surveys the secret and unique gems of interesting architecture and interiors around the Slovakia. Authors Hertha Hurnaus, Benjamin Konrad and Maik Novotny want to put closer this inconsistent capitol of European architecture through beautiful photos and texts about buildings but also interviews with great Slovak architects of this period Štefan Svetko, Ivan Matušík, Jan Báhna and Vladimir Dědeček. A lot of examples are still largely unknown, compared to all in the west.

In the book we can explore the fantastic atmosphere of Bratislava crematory, which was built in the years 1962 – 1968 by architect Ferdinand Milučky or expressive shapes of Slovakian Broadcasting Building by Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabaš Kissling from 1970s. Other interesting architecture is above all from capital city of Bratislava or from Tatra mountain, where was built a lot of extravagand hotels and sport facilities in the 1960s and 1970s. And also University of Agriculture in Nitra by Vladimír Dědeček surprise at very modern look and experimental design of 1960s

I think, that this book opens new views on the socialist era architecture, which will be into the future still more a more reputable.
