October is the month of design in Bulgaria. This is when the first edition of the Bulgarian Design Biennial takes place. It was opened on Oct. 8th and will continue until Oct. 29th. Its theme is “The Art of Creating Quality of Life”, its aim – to gather together in one place a „full kaleidoscope“ of works from all the fields of of design. The large exhibition has three sections: Education, in which students from design schools exhibit their academic projects; Conception, or ideas and concepts for future projects and Design Product, design prototypes for items of single or serial production. A project from each field was awarded by an international jury.

The events programme included also 3-days lectiures given by international names in the world of design. Highlights were the talk on automobile design; a lecture by Emilio Gil of the Spanish architecture studio 24 x 365 on applied graphic design in Spain; on Contemporary Exhibited Design and Communication Decisions of Design Exhibitions by Philipp Teufel from the German Fachhochschule Düsseldorf/University of Applied Sciences as well as interesting projects by Bulgarian designers.

The closing of the the lectures was with a Night of Design packed with young design-lovers.
We hope that Bulgarian Design Biennial will become a meeting point between education, industry, cultural and administrative institutions, a forum for discovering new talents and for discussing the possibilities for better communication and coordination.
