Tomáš Gabzdil is Designer of the Future

Last week on Design Miami/Basel in Basel were presented four winners of Designer of the Future award. Next to the rising stars of „design art“ movement Raw Edges studio, Peter Marigold and Nacho Carbonell was awarded Studio Libertiny, which established Tomáš Gabzdil original from Slovakia.

Studio Libertiny was founded in Rotterdam in 2006 after Gabzdils graduation at Design Academy in Eindhoven under direction of Gijs Bakker from Droog design. Also Tomáš was fascinated by conceptual approach of dutch design.

Before that designer studied Industrial Design Department at the Technical University in Bratislava. But soon he found this discipline too limiting in free creation. So in 2002 he transferred to Academy of Fine Arts and Design also in Bratislava. So in his work technical design approach was enriched by a free-minded sculptural attitude.

Since 2006 he is one of the strongest forces of dutch design movement. His Wax vase made by Bees became bestseller of Droog design and his Paper vase made from 700 sheets of paper laminated to one block and after lathe to pure vase shape was design highlights of last year Design Miami. All objects designed by Gabzdil work with materials and their specific characters and making processions. Because of this he was also included on show Craft Punk in Milan this year, which shows design performances.

In Basel Tomáš exhibited installation called Reflection on theme “viewer-encompassing environment that stimulates discourse, reflection and community” made from plaster. Big plaster egg is from one side pure and complete, but from the other side became rough like earth surface which unfold lost layers of material. Also in this project design is interested in use different materials and discover their features.
