Design Faction at Lodz design Festival 2011

When we were at The Lodz Design Festival, we were very pleased that all the exhibitions there had their own concept and strong idea. Presented by curators from the various points of view, the exhibitions were not only the “classic” design presentations. One of the most interesting was an exhibition called Design Faction which presented really unorthodox design movement of these days.

Curated by Polish Kasia Jezowska who studies History of Design at The Royal College of Art in London, the exhibition presented work of 12 designers interested in new technologies and their innovative use in our everyday life. The projects are interested in changes of the human body, especially. “The exhibition presents twelve stories that explore the space between design and science. The projects speculate on possibilities of the human body blurring the border between innovation and critical commentary.”, says curator Kasia Jezowska. Some of the exhibited projects propose new human behavior based on technologies and new body upgrades. For example Dominic Wilcox`s Finger Nose Stylus enables using touchscreen devices with only one hand. You touch it by the big “pinocchio stylized” artificial nose instead of finger. Perfect for the bathroom as says Wilcox. Vilma Juruseviciute presented her project called Urban Dolls which explores problematic and concept of the contemporary cult of beauty. Her upgrades used for the human body are the substitutions for the plastic surgery. Permanent procedures are transformed into flexible, temporary prosthetics. Similar approaches characterized by the connection of art, design and science and technology we could see in every presented project here.

All the projects were exhibited in the nice, well considered installation as well.
